The Amalfi Coast is the southern slope of the Sorrentine peninsula and the Regional Park of the Monti Lattari, the "Milky Mountains": about 35 km long (20 miles) from the cape called Punta Campanella to Vietri sul mare. These mountains divide the Gulf of Salerno to the south, which the Amalfi coast is a part of, from the Gulf of Naples to the north which the Sorrentine villages belong to. Capri was the final part of these mountains until the last ice age, about 100.000 year ago, when it became an island.

The State road 163, called Strada statale 163 Amalfitana, is known as one of the most fascinating roads in the world: 50 km (30 miles) of narrow streets, scenic, dizzying and sometimes thrilling overlooking the sea. It connect the villages of the southern side of the peninsula. On this road, the typical Amalfi houses perch on the hills, among the labyrinth of ancient paths, and the famous terraced lemon groves. Punta Campanella, the most northern point, (to the northwest about 5 kilometers/3miles from Capri), is a protected marine reserve.

The villages of the Amalfi coast, which are all inhabited, are considered World Heritage and protected by the United Nations' agency Unesco, namely: Positano, Praiano, Furore, Agerola, Conca dei Marini, Amalfi, Atrani, Scala, Ravello, Minori, Maiori, Tramonti, Cetara, Vietri. Each of them deserves a visit. On the northern coast, instead, you have: Sorrento, Sant'Agnello, Massa Lubrense, Vico Equense, Meta (small parts of them also have a "window" on the southern slope, but they are not considered a part of the Amalfi coast).
