Why visit Pompeii:
Since its discovery by chance in 1749, Pompeii has become one of the most visited places in the world. When to visit Pompeii:
In summer it is easier to join an organized tour from Amalfi coast and other places but check here availability at any time, from any city.
The classical tour takes about 2-2:30hours (The Forum, public buildings and main temples, theatres, taverns, thermal baths, a brothel, a villa and public fountains). So this is always an easy walking tour for almost everybody.
People, who want to spend more time in Pompeii, can rely on local services to have lunch - there are cafés and toilets. On the first Sunday of every month the entrance is free (save € 13,00), but this is not always a good idea unless you go there in late afternoon when the non-paying mass goes away. As you probably visit Pompeii once in your life, you should get the most out of it.
The morning or the afternoon? In the morning there it is for sure busier, so it is easier to book and join a guided tour. But there are also guides in the afternoon (4 pm-7 pm) who accompany small groups to provide the information and the feel of this place. Check availability.
